Company Profile

GoDaddy is a global domain registration and web hosting company that provides domains, websites, hosting, email, and online marketing solutions. They operate their own infrastructure and power millions of websites worldwide, offering small businesses and individuals a platform to create, manage, and grow their online presence.

Background

After acquiring Over, a creative design platform and Canva competitor, GoDaddy rebranded it as GoDaddy Studio to expand its suite of digital branding tools.

Over’s infrastructure operated on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) with around 20 microservices, while GoDaddy’s ecosystem was standardized on Amazon Web Services (AWS) with strict security and compliance requirements.

This created a key opportunity to migrate and unify Over’s GCP setup into GoDaddy’s AWS environment, ensuring scalability, security, and operational consistency across the platform.

Business Challange

Following the acquisition, GoDaddy faced several critical challenges in integrating Over’s GCP-based infrastructure into its AWS ecosystem:

  • Complex Multi-Cloud Environment: Over ran around 20 microservices on GCP, creating a fragmented architecture that needed consolidation.

  • Minimal Downtime Requirement: Migration had to ensure uninterrupted service for a large user base.

  • Data and Security Compliance: Aligning databases, network configurations, and inter-service communication with GoDaddy’s strict security and operational standards.

  • Service Standardization: Transitioning microservices to AWS-native services without disrupting existing workflows.

  • Scalability and Monitoring: Establishing robust monitoring, logging, and scalable infrastructure to support future growth.

The core challenge: Migrate Over’s infrastructure to AWS efficiently, securely, and with minimal disruption, while ensuring long-term scalability and operational reliability.

Solution Offered

To ensure a smooth migration without disrupting operations, we adopted a multi-phased approach focused on precision, automation, and security.

Benefits

Technology Used

The migration of Over (GoDaddy Studio) to AWS delivered significant advantages across operational, security, and scalability dimensions:

  • Seamless Service Migration: All 20 microservices were successfully transitioned to AWS without disrupting end users.

  • Minimal Downtime: Database migration using AWS DMS ensured near-zero downtime during cutover.

  • Enhanced Security: Automated secret rotation, mutual TLS, and private VPC endpoints strengthened inter-service communication and data protection.

  • Standardized Infrastructure: Microservices now run on AWS-native tools like EKS, S3, SNS/SQS, providing consistency and easier maintenance.

  • Improved Observability: Centralized monitoring and logging via Elastic Cloud and Kibana enhanced operational visibility and faster issue resolution.

  • Operational Efficiency: CI/CD pipelines, Helm charts, and GitOps practices simplified deployments and reduced manual effort.

  • Future-Ready Scalability: The AWS-based architecture supports rapid growth and innovation, ensuring GoDaddy Studio can scale reliably with demand.

  • AWS Aurora – Managed Database

  • AWS DMS – Continuous Database Replication

  • Amazon EKS – Kubernetes Orchestration

  • AWS SNS/SQS – Message Queuing & Event Handling

  • Amazon S3 – Object Storage

  • AWS Secrets Manager – Automated Secret Rotation

  • Linkerd – Service Mesh & mTLS Security

  • Elastic Cloud & Kibana – Monitoring & Observability

  • GitHub Actions, Helm & Flux – CI/CD and GitOps Automation

  • AWS CloudFormation – Infrastructure as Code

1. Database Migration

  • Migrated Over’s CloudSQL (MySQL) databases to AWS Aurora.

  • Utilized AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) for continuous replication with minimal downtime.

  • Configured Aurora to replicate CloudSQL during transition for a seamless cutover.

2. Network Configuration

  • Designed a secure AWS architecture with public and private subnets following AWS best practices.

  • Implemented robust network protections: ACLs, security groups, and VPC flow logs.

  • Ensured all inter-service communication remained private and compliant with GoDaddy standards.

3. Service Transition

  • Replaced GCP-managed services with AWS equivalents:

    • Google Pub/Sub → AWS SNS/SQS

    • Google Cloud Storage → Amazon S3

  • Migrated containerized microservices from Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) to Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS).

4. Security Enhancements

  • Enforced automated secret rotation every 90 days using AWS Secrets Manager.

  • Implemented mutual TLS authentication between services via Linkerd service mesh.

  • Established VPC endpoints for secure communication with Elastic Cloud, ensuring no public internet exposure.

5. Monitoring and Logging

  • Configured Elasticsearch and Kibana for centralized monitoring, log aggregation, and visualization.

  • Integrated Elastic Cloud with private VPC endpoints for end-to-end security.

6. CI/CD Pipeline Standardization

  • Built unified CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions to streamline multi-repo management.

  • Developed Helm charts to standardize service deployments across clusters.

  • Adopted GitOps workflows using Flux, ensuring consistent and version-controlled Kubernetes operations.

7. Service Migration Strategy

  • Followed a phased migration approach, transitioning one microservice at a time to minimize risk.

  • Leveraged AWS CloudFormation for infrastructure as code (IaC) to enable reproducible environments.

  • Used Google Cloud Functions as interim forwarders between GCP Pub/Sub and AWS SNS/SQS, ensuring uninterrupted event handling during migration.

Conclusion

The Over to GoDaddy Studio migration exemplifies how a well-orchestrated cloud transition can deliver business agility, security compliance, and operational excellence.

By leveraging AWS-native tools, automation, and best-in-class DevOps practices, the migration not only aligned GoDaddy Studio with corporate infrastructure standards but also unlocked greater scalability, visibility, and resilience — enabling the brand to innovate faster in a unified ecosystem.
